Computer Science

Computer scientists and programmers have a very exciting and rewarding time ahead. Rewarding financially as organisations compete for technically able staff. Exciting because computer scientists will be instrumental in shaping our future in terms of business innovation, medical advances and the way people will communicate and interact.

Computer Science is best learnt in a practical environment and students will find their time split between learning how computers work and obtaining hands on experience of computer programming. We will use a range of programming languages and approaches to develop problem solving and application development skills in areas such as web design, business systems and games design.

Students will study computer architecture, logic circuits and CPU design to understand how these influence modern technology. They will also study the use of computers in network design and business systems. As a key part of our practical approach to study, students will complete an individual project, using a language of their choice, to create a real-world application. During this they extend their problem solving and project management skills.

“The course gives students a chance to work at their own speed, and gives plenty of opportunity for research into more advanced code during lessons”

Next Steps

Our students have gone on to a wide range of higher education or employment opportunities. Many advance on to university to study pure computer science or to specialise in related subjects such as artificial intelligence, cyber security or games design. Computer science has been described as a foundational science, one which makes other knowledge and achievements possible. We see the proof of this in students who choose to follow their personal interests in combination degrees such as computing and science or even computing and psychology.

Increasingly our students go into apprenticeships and employment straight from College. Technology focused organisations, keen to employ able staff, often offer full degree apprenticeships. In 2019 two of our students followed this route and are now gaining work experience and a degree all while getting paid.
