English Literature
BackWhat better way to develop analytical skills, writing skills and discussion skills? Students will experience the alternative worlds, delights and pleasures wrapped up in the fantastic literature they will study on this course. Reading novels, drama and poetry is a treat that anyone interested in books cannot fail to enjoy.
In the first year of the course students will learn to be a critic and close reader of mostly 20th century literature. In the second year, our leap through time increases, to take learners back to the 16th century where they will study the language of love through the ages. Shakespeare, William Blake, Thomas Hardy, Arthur Miller, Jeanette Winterson and Carol Ann Duffy are just some of the authors they will encounter on the A level English Literature course. Additionally, students get to choose texts for their independent study so that they can follow their interests. Debate and analytical exploration are key skills they will develop as students hone essay writing and discussion skills.
“I love being able to discuss and debate literature. Studying A Level English Literature has really challenged me to explore new genres.”
Next Steps
Success at A level English Literature shows the ability to read closely, form opinions and ideas, infer, debate, evaluate and write fluently and powerfully whilst also developing cultural capital. It is a demanding, rigorous and very enjoyable A level which develops academic commitment and ability. Many university courses or apprenticeships require the skills this subject deploys and enhances. Most subjects at university, from any of the arts and humanities to science, will recognise Literature as a good worthwhile and valid A level.
Professions such as law, marketing, sales, teaching, public relations, and human resources might be obvious career choices but English Literature can also be useful alongside more of the science and maths-based subjects to show a range of skills.
