Maths
BackA Level Mathematics is an interesting and challenging course which extends the methods students are learning at GCSE. It will appeal to any student who is on track to achieve at least grade 7 at GCSE, or grade 8 for Further Mathematics, enjoys thinking logically and methodically, and solving problems.
A-Level Maths is made up of Pure, Statistics, and Mechanics. The Further Maths course consists of Pure and Statistics only.
- Pure Mathematics – Extending your knowledge in familiar areas such as Algebra, Trigonometry, and Co-ordinate Geometry as well as studying new areas such as Calculus and Logarithms.
- Mechanics – Modelling and analysing the physical world around us, including the motion of objects and how they respond to forces.
- Statistics – Collecting, summarising and analysing numerical data, extending the probability theory that you studied at GCSE including learning about the Binomial and Normal Distributions.
“Mathematics at A Level offers the core knowledge needed to do a science subject at university; it also develops your thinking skills and logic to levels that will help with any future career.”
Next Steps
A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics are versatile qualifications, well-respected by employers and are both “facilitating” subjects for entry to higher education. Many employers value mathematics qualifications as mathematics students are better at thinking logically and analytically. Through solving problems, you develop resilience and are able to think creatively and strategically. People who have studied mathematics are in the fortunate position of having an excellent choice of career.
For most science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree courses, A Level Mathematics is a requirement and AS or A level Further Mathematics is often a preferred subject. Anyone thinking of applying to study a degree in a STEM subject should consider taking Further Mathematics to at least AS level as the additional content helps ensure a successful progression to university. Having A level Further Mathematics on your university application is a way to make it stand out.
